About
Some businesses start with a business plan. This one started with the water.
I'm Paul Mullen. I grew up on the Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland — a place where seaweed has fed families and fertilised fields for generations. You don't grow up there without understanding what the ocean gives you, and what you owe it in return.
After moving to the United States I earned a degree in Marine Engineering and a master's in Marine Resources Management. I represented the USA Men's National Rugby Team in the 2019 Rugby World Cup and earned 39 international caps. And somewhere along the way, I ended up on the coast of Maine — working the same waters that coastal farmers have relied on for centuries, harvesting one of the most productive species of seaweed in the Atlantic.
The Ascophyllum nodosum harvested from the Gulf of Maine goes to North American Kelp in Waldoboro — a Maine-based processor that has been working with this species since 1971. There it's processed into buoy™ Concentrated Seaweed Extract, an OMRI listed biostimulant that works for everyone from backyard gardeners to working farms.
When you buy from Wild Maine Seaweed, you're buying from someone with a direct, personal connection to the harvest and the water it comes from. That's a short supply chain. That's accountability. And that's something no other retailer of this product can offer you.
What we believe:
The ocean is a resource, not a commodity. Maine's intertidal zone is one of the most productive marine ecosystems in the world. We operate within sustainable limits, rotate harvest sites seasonally, and work under a Maine DMR licensed wild harvest permit. The beds worked today need to be productive for the next generation — and for the generation after that. That's not a marketing position. It's how I was raised.
Short supply chains make better products. The fewer hands between harvest and your garden, the more you know about what you're getting. We know exactly where our seaweed comes from because we've been there, worked those waters, and built this business from that experience.
Organic farming deserves better inputs. buoy™ is OMRI listed for certified organic production because we believe the inputs going into organic growing should be as clean as the food coming out of it.
Wild Maine Seaweed is less than a year old. But the connection behind it runs across an ocean and back generations. We're building this carefully — the same way we work the water.
If you're growing anything, this is where your seaweed comes from.
